Fatal crash: Car strikes utility pole, vacant building at Seminary and Catherine

At around 2 a.m., Sunday, March 23, Rockford Police District 2 officers responded to the area of 1300 Seminary Street for multiple reports of a serious traffic crash.

Upon arrival, officers located a 1998 Chevrolet Lumina that had struck a utility pole and a vacant building at Seminary Street and Catherine Street. The driver, a 21-year-old Rockford woman, died at the scene of the crash. One passenger, an 18-year-old Rockford woman, was ejected from the vehicle and was transported to a local hospital by Rockford Fire Department with serious non-life threatening injuries.

Two other passengers — an 18-year-old Rockford woman and a 19-year-old Rockford woman — were transported to a local hospital by Rockford Fire Department with minor injuries.

The Rockford Police Department is withholding the names of the victims pending notification of family members.

The damage to the utility pole caused a significant power outage in the area, and residents were expected to be without power for several hours Sunday. The roadway on Seminary Street between Gregory Street and Buckbee Street was also closed for most of the day Sunday as investigators processed the scene and crews worked to restore power.
