MACHESNEY PARK, Ill. — Illinois Route 173 in Machesney Park has been reduced to one lane in each direction as work to widen the road is under way.

The project will widen the 2-mile stretch from Alpine Road to Interstate 90. The new road will add four lanes, new stoplights, sidewalks, turn lanes and storm sewers.

The 173/Alpine Road, 173/Illinois 251 intersections have already been widened to accommodate the influx of traffic as the area continues to grow into a booming retail and residential district.

Work is scheduled to be completed by November 2015, Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) spokesmen said. The project is expected to cost $28 million.
