RAYS swim team delivers impressive results at YMCA State Championships

Twenty-nine members of the YMCA of Rock River Valley RAYS youth swim team competed at the 2014 Illinois YMCA State Swimming Championships March 22-23 at the Rec Plex in Pleasant Prairie, Wis.
Event highlights include: The RAYS 8 & Under Female & Male Combined Team was overall state champion, placing first out of 21 “large teams” with a combined score of 280 points. The RAYS 12 & Under Girls took third overall out of 18 “large teams” with a score of 198 points. Also, two RAYS 8 & Under swimmers achieved first-place finishes in their individual state events: Molly Ryan and Camden Taylor.
Eleven RAYS achieved top 8 finishes in individual event finals, including: Sophie Bergsten, eighth place in Female 12 & Under 50 yd. Breast (35.61); Leah Boccignone, eighth place in Female 14 & Under 500 yd. Free (5:32.15); Nhia Caras, fifth place in Female 12 & Under 50 yd. Free (26.24), eighth place in 100 yd. Fly (1:08.71), and sixth place in 50 yd. Fly (29.30); Brady Dolan, fifth place in Male 10 & Under 50 yd. Breast (40.33); Victoria Dolan, seventh place in Female 12 & Under 100 yd. Fly (1:08.18), seventh place in 50 yd. Breast (34.26), and fifth place in 100 yd. Breast (1:15.38); Mikayla Durkin, second place in Female 8 & Under 25 yd. Back (18.11), third place in 100 yd. IM (1:26.07), and second place in 50 yd. Free (33.27); Rachel Gander, fourth place in Female 12 & Under 100 yd. Back (1:06.68); Zain Miles, second place in Male 10 & Under 50 yd. Free (28.12); Tyler Pidde, fourth place in Male 14 & Under 200 yd. Free (1:51.73), second place in 100 yd. Breast (1:04.01), third place in 500 yd. Free (5:00.83), and second place in 200 yd. IM (2:02.13); Ryan, first place in Female 8 & Under 25 yd. Back (17.79), second place in 25 yd. Free (15.27) and fourth place in 25 yd. Fly (17.31); and Taylor, first place in Male 8 & Under 100 yd. IM (1:20.08), first place in 50 yd. Free (31.68) and 1st place in 25 yd. Fly (16.28).
Additionally, the RAYS Female 8 & Under 100 yd. Medley Relay (Samantha Appino, Mikayla Durkin, Avery Miles and Ryan) took second place with a time of 1:14.97; and the Female 8 & Under 100 yd. Free Relay (Appino, Durkin, Avery Miles and Ryan) placed first with a time of 1:05.31. The RAYS Female 12 & Under 200 yd. Medley Relay (Bergsten, Caras, Victoria Dolan and Gander) placed fourth with a time of 2:02.26; and the Female 12 & Under 200 yd. Free Relay (Caras, Victoria Dolan, Gander and Katie Roxworthy) took third place with a time of 1:49.71.
Next up for the RAYS: 23 swimmers will compete at YMCA Midwest Regionals, held April 5-6 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
