Multiple charges filed in alleged Rockford gun incident

The man Rockford Police say was disarmed by officers Sunday, April 20, faces several charges, according to court records.
Devante Turner, 20, of Rockford, has been charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery of a police officer, resisting arrest and no FOID.
At approximately 6 p.m., Sunday, police were called to Central and Sherman avenues in reference to a subject with a gun. When officers arrived, they approached two men walking in the area. Police say Turner fled north when ordered to stop. During a foot chase through yards in the 900 block of Independence Avenue, Turner allegedly pull a black handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the officer.
The officer then tackled Turner and was able to wrestle the gun away. Police say Tuner continued to fight with the officer and other officers who came to assist in the arrest. During the struggle, Turner allegedly bit an officer on the arm.
Turner is being held in the Winnebago County Jail on a $75,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court May 19.
