Online Staff Report

One man was listed in critical condition Monday, April 28, after the driver of a SUV caused a traffic crash while fleeing from police on Rockford’s west side.

At around 10:20 p.m. Monday, a Rockford Police officer in a marked squad car attempted a traffic stop on a Chevrolet Tahoe near West and Blake streets.

The Tahoe did not stop and continued to the intersection of Morgan Street. There, the driver ran a stop sign and hit a westbound Pontiac Bonneville.

The impact caused both vehicles to come to rest in a yard on the southwest corner of the intersection. The black male driver of the Tahoe exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The officer went to the Bonneville and located the unresponsive male driver.

A Rockford Fire Department rescue unit responded and transported the man to a local hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.

The driver of the Tahoe was not located.

A description of the suspect, or suspect vehicle, has not been released.
