Man on parole faces charges following attempted burglary on North Gardiner

Thursday, May 8, Rockford police responded to the 200 block of North Gardiner Avenue in reference to a burglary in progress. While en route to the call, officers were told the suspect had made entry into a residential garage.

When officers arrived on scene, they observed a male subject fleeing on foot from the garage, while carrying a crow bar. After a short foot chase, the suspect was apprehended.

The suspect has been identified as Peter Papas, 53, of Rockford. Papas, who is on parole, has been charged with burglary, attempted burglary, criminal damage to property (two counts), possession of burglary tools and resisting arrest.

While conducting their on-scene investigation, officers learned the suspect attempted to enter a neighboring garage. The investigation is ongoing.
