Online Staff Report
The 2014 Rockford Midwestern is the 73rd presentation of Rockford Art Museum’s (RAM) survey exhibition of contemporary art in the Midwest today. The biennial competition was open to original artwork in any medium by residents of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin; 260 artists submitted 738 works for consideration.
The show opens to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, May 17, with free admission. A members’ and artists’ preview is from 5 to 6 p.m., Friday, May 16, with a gallery walk for members and exhibiting artists from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The show will remain on exhibit through Sept. 28.
2014 juror William Lieberman selected 80 works by 58 artists for inclusion and awards (Best of Show, First Place 2-D, First Place 3-D), which will be presented during the May 16 preview for members and exhibiting artists.
“The resulting exhibition offers a broad spectrum of styles and media, including photography, works on paper, painting, drawing, sculpture, video, collage, and ceramic sculpture,” he said. “A combination of narrative ideas, intellectual content, superb craftsmanship, and the innovative execution of techniques were factors that influenced my decisions.”
Lieberman is owner and director of Zolla/Lieberman Gallery in Chicago’s River North neighborhood. Founded in 1976, the influential contemporary art gallery represents artists from across the nation, including prominent Midwest artists Phyllis Bramson, Roger Brown, William Conger, Josh Garber and Maria Tomasula.
Also presented during the preview is the 2014 Dean Alan Olson Purchase Award, to the artist whose work was selected by Rockford Art Museum for the RAM Permanent Collection. The 2014 Rockford Midwestern and its related educational programming are sponsored by the Dean Alan Olson Foundation and partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency. The museum purchase award is sponsored by the Dean Alan Olson Foundation. All RAM education programs are supported in part by Women’s Art Board of Rockford Art Museum.
RAM is inside Riverfront Museum Park, 711 N. Main St., Rockford. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily.
