Arrest made in May 4 homicide

Police have charged a Rockford man with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 27-year-old James S. Tilson, authorities announced Friday, May 16.

Willie Burnett Jr., 33, was taken into custody Thursday, May 15, on unrelated weapons charges. He was charged with Tilson’s murder Friday.

Tilson was found shot to death in the front seat of a car parked in the yard of a vacant home at 4211 Crandall Ave., in unincorporated Winnebago County Sunday, May 4. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Burnett is lodged in the Winnebago County Jail on a $1 million bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday, May 19.
