Help ‘Hoo’ Haven wildlife center with its ‘Wish List’

By Frank Schier

The mission statement of “Hoo” Haven is as follows: “‘Hoo’ Haven is dedicated to rehabilitating and releasing sick, injured and orphaned, North American wildlife. And to educating individuals to the importance of the conservation of Mother Earth, to maintain the land and keep it clean and beautiful for all.”

You may recognize the name “Hoo Haven” because they released two American bald eagles they rehabilitated Saturday, May 10.

Hoo Haven is a wonderful organization that rescues critters of many kinds and conducts educational outreach throughout the region.

They need our help and support to operate. Please contribute in any way you can.

Hoo” Haven may be reached at: P.O. Box 594, Durand, IL 61024, or phone (815) 629-2212, or e-mail

The following “Wish List” is from and Karen Herdklotz:

I am grateful to all who have gone to our web page for donations for Hoo.

Desperately needed

We need NON-GROUND red meat. It does not matter if it is beef or deer meat. Right now, we have more than 40 raptors to feed with huge appetites. We use a lot of deer necks, but right now, we need meat — NON-GROUND chunks.

You can bring it to the facility, or you can bring it to me at my place of employment with arrangements. Feel free to call (815) 629-2212 and leave a message.

We have been putting together booklets and more for programs, and we could use copy paper and ink for a Lexmark and a Dell 2155.

Baby season is here, and we use KMR and puppy milk replacer. We have found they work the best. You can get these at any of the pet stores, or sometimes Walmart carries them.

  • Replacement sponges for the mop; Vileda Rollomatic: Walmart for sure. We use about two to three every week. They are light, clean easy, and are quick.
  • Cereal: Honey Nut Cheerios
  • Granola
  • Apple-flavored Cheerios
  • Nuts: All kinds of nuts, except peanuts, in the shell or out
  • Paper towels and toilet paper
  • Mighty Dog (beef) in the small cans dog food: robins, opossums and more adore it.
  • Dog food: Little Bits prefer 20-pound bags (it is much easier for me to lug around)
  • Yogurt; flavored, not low-calorie: Babies love it and it is used for transition
  • Hamster food for our educational rats
  • Parrot food for the two we rescued

We always can use meat and fish: More of the round meat type now and meaty fish.

You can always just drop it off in front of the door of Hoo. If no one is there, I will take care of it when I get home. Please leave your name, address and phone number, or I will never know who the Little Angels are.

Thank you to all, and God Bless,
Karen Herdklotz

Hoo” Haven is also looking for donations of much-needed items. If you or your groups, whether they be church, school or businesses, would like to help, we would appreciate it. Here is a list of needs:

  • 30-gallon garbage bags
  • Nuts, nuts and more nuts (in the shell or out of the shell)
  • Hamster food for our educational rats
  • Bird seed
  • Paper towels
  • Scrubbing Dobie pads
  • Putty knives (metal)
  • Small rakes
  • Dust pans
  • Different size leashes
  • Bungee cords
  • Tie wraps

If you are not sure, call. If we cannot use it, we will tell you, but if we can, we will be grateful.

Again, we need deer meat, fish or beef if you are cleaning out your freezer.

Any help you can give us would be appreciated. When you have a collection, call, and we will set up a time for you to come out and see where it is going, or we can try to arrange a pick-up.

Thank you for any help you can give us. If everyone does a little, we can do a lot.
