UPDATE: Suspect in custody in fatal hit-and-run near downtown YMCA

The suspect in Tuesday morning’s fatal hit-and-run near Y Boulevard in Rockford has been identified as 46-year-old George White. White allegedly flipped the 2000 Chevy Impala he was driving, crashing into a pickup truck driven by 57-year-old David Logterman. Logerterman was killed.

Police say White fled the scene on foot. He was caught a short time later after witnesses reported seeing him the area. White has been charged with aggravated DUI, leaving the scene of a traffic crash involving death, and aggravated driving after revocation.

Rockford Police have one man in custody after the car he was allegedly driving was involved in car crash that killed a 57-year-old man Tuesday morning, May 20.

The crash occurred at 4:47 a.m., near Longwood and Y Boulevard, where a Chevrolet Impala lost control, flipped and landed on a Chevrolet S-10 pickup. Both vehicles came to rest on the Whitman Street ramp off of North Second Street. The driver of the Impala fled on foot. He was arrested after witnesses reported seeing him leave the scene.

Traffic is expected to be rerouted until Tuesday afternoon. Following is a list of roads that remain closed as of this report.

From north:
• Closed at North Second Street and Y Boulevard. Traffic flows to Madison, then south.

From south:
• Closed at North Third at Hill Street. Traffic will flow west onto the Whitman interchange to North Main Street, then north to Harlem Boulevard.

From west:
• Closed at Whitman to North Second Street. Traffic will flow around to Sixth Street and can cross back over to Longwood to travel north.

The name of the suspect and victim are being withheld at this time, police said. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

    This is why we need stiffer DUI penalties. This man has 4 DUIs, no license and now he has murdered someone, yes, MURDERED someone. I hope the judge throws the book at him and he gets life without parole.
