Joseph G. McGraw named vice chairman of Illinois Conference of Chief Judges
The 17th Judicial Circuit has announced Chief Judge Joseph G. McGraw has been selected as the vice chairman of the Illinois Conference of Chief Judges.
The Illinois Conference of Chief Judges was established and operates under the authority of the Illinois Supreme Court. The Conference of Chief Judges is responsible for considering problems relating to the administration of the 23 Circuit Courts in Illinois and other matters as referred by the Illinois Supreme Court.
A duly-elected chief judge from each judicial circuit serves as a member of the Conference of Chief Judges, which regularly meets on a monthly basis.
Recently, the members of the Conference selected both a chairman and a vice chairman to preside over their monthly meetings. The chairman of the Conference of Chief Judges is Chief Judge Elizabeth A. Robb from the 11th Judicial Circuit Court. Chief Judge McGraw was selected as vice chairman of the Conference of Chief Judges April 25.
The 17th Judicial Circuit Court is a progressive force in court innovation and has pioneered numerous successful court programs, including a Therapeutic Intervention Program (TIP) Mental Health Court, Drug Court, Family Drug Court, Youth Recovery Court, Veterans Court, a Court Annexed Arbitration Program, a pilot Extended Media Coverage Program, and most recently, the nation’s first-ever Domestic Violence Coordinated Court.
The American Bar Association has honored the 17th Judicial Circuit Court, Winnebago County Bar Association and Boone County Bar Association with an E. Smythe Gambrell Award for pioneering local initiatives designed to enhance professionalism and civility in the legal profession.
Several of the judges from the 17th Circuit Court are representatives on local, state and national committees and organizations. Judge McGraw is a regular instructor for the Illinois Appellate Prosecutor’s Trial Advocacy Program, an active member of the Illinois Supreme Court special Committees on Minimum Continuing Legal Education (M.C.L.E.) and Judicial Ethics, and a former faculty member of the Illinois Supreme Court Committee on Capital Litigation.
The selection of Judge McGraw as vice chairman of the Illinois Conference of Chief Judges is an honor shared by all of the past and present judges of the 17th Circuit Court and trial court administration staff. It reflects favorably on the leadership that the 17th Circuit Court has provided and continues to provide statewide.
As the vice chairman of the Illinois Conference of Chief Judges, Judge McGraw will continue to provide leadership in the 17th Circuit Court and serve the legal system on a statewide level by promoting integrity, efficiency and professionalism in the administration of justice.
