Music Academy students to perform in San Antonio

Staff Report

Students, faculty, parents and Foundation board members of the Music Academy in Rockford will leave June 10 for a musical and cultural tour of San Antonio, Texas. The trip is the culmination of “Mariachi, Mozart and More,” the Academy’s year-long celebration of Mexican folk music, culture and Mariachi.

Mexican folk music is experiencing an exciting Mariachi resurgence in Texas as well as the rest of the country. While in San Antonio, students will perform in a friendship concert and educational exchange with Mariachi artists renowned for their work in both Mexico and the U.S.

Music Academy students will perform in the Calvary Courtyard of the Alamo and at the Arenson River Theater on the famed River Walk. They also will have performance opportunities in their hotel lobby during rehearsals. In addition to the performances, travelers will also take a river cruise and visit El Mercado, the market square, and the San Antonio Zoological Gardens and Aquarium.

Mariachi, Mozart and More” is partially supported by a grant from the Community Arts and Humanities Program of the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois and the Rockford Area Arts Council. The Music Academy is a not-for-profit community school of music dedicated to providing high-quality, affordable instruction and performance opportunities to students regardless of age or ability.
