Tube Talk: The return of the ‘Junk Gypsies’

Long before sisters Amie and Jolie Sikes’ show Junk Gypsies came to TV in 2012 on HGTV, the Junk Gypsy brand was well known, especially among high-profile clients like country music stars Dierks Bently, Miranda Lambert and her husband, Blake Shelton. Not only did Amie and Jolie design Lambert’s now iconic “guns and wings” logo, they also designed the country chic reception for Lambert’s 2011 wedding to Shelton.
“With one boot so firmly planted in country music, our partnership with Great American Country just seems like we’ve come home,” Amie says. The timing is right, now that GAC — a sister channel to HGTV — is transitioning from a country music channel to a lifestyle network. “It seems like the perfect place for Junk Gypsies, as we truly are about living the American dream — in the country, with our family in tow,” Amie says.
If you’re unfamiliar with Junk Gypsies, here’s the primer: The series, named after Amie and Jolie’s successful business, follows the sisters at work and play, showing what goes into creating their funky vintage country style. There’s a lot of scavenging, scraping, painting, sawing, drilling, wiring and elbow grease involved in bringing their creative visions to life. Amie and Jolie do a lot of the work themselves, but friends and family members often pitch in, too.
“This season, viewers will truly be able to see more of what we do at Junk Gypsy on a day-to-day basis,” Amie says. “It involves more of our family life, more of the business side of running a business that spans the gamut from working with celebrities — like Sadie Robertson of Duck Dynasty — to playing baseball with the Junk Gypsy crew, to cooking dinner with our family and runnin’ down great junk on some Texas back roads.”
Quite recently, Amie and Jolie realized the impact their show was having when they met a father and his two teenage daughters. The father said since his daughters started watching Junk Gypsies they’d taken over his workshop.
“We said, ‘Wow! Are your proud of your girls?’ and he said, ‘Yes, I am. I couldn’t ask for them to be in a better place,’” Amie says. “Then, we all teared up. And we realized that’s the type of thing that makes this all so gratifying. That’s what we hope people will take away from the show — and to keep on dreaming.”
Make no mistake, Amie and Jolie aren’t accidental successes or wannabe reality stars. They both have solid business backgrounds, but ditched the corporate world to do what they love with the people they love. While their Junk Gypsy brand has grown from the exposure of the TV show, Amie says they’re still doing what they’ve always done. “That’s working with our family, building our junk empire, and staying true to ourselves,” she says.
