Online Staff Report
Thursday, June 19, the Shire of Blackhawk invites you to experience the Middle Ages and discover the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) at Newcomers’ Night. The event will be at Northwest Community Center’s Corbett Building, 1325 N. Johnston Ave., Rockford, from 7 to 9 p.m.
During Newcomers’ Night, attendees can watch demonstrations of fencing and various crafts, and sample food from medieval recipes. There will be hands-on activities, too.
The Shire of Blackhawk is the Rockford branch of the SCA. Founded in 1968, the SCA is an international living history organization composed of more than 100,000 people with a passion for exploring the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
Members explore armored combat, fencing, sewing, jewelry-making, cooking, or any other craft, skill or occupation that was part of life before 1600. They explore by doing. They fight wearing metal or leather armor and simulated weapons. They fence with rapiers styled after swords common in the era. They sew garments based on clothing that existed during a time long before malls and the Internet. They gather at events on weekends to share their skills and recreate the best of a medieval day.
The Shire of Blackhawk meets at the Northwest Community Center’s Corbett Building at 1325 N. Johnston Ave. in Rockford. For more information about the event and the Shire of Blackhawk, contact Allen Reed at (815) 973-1615 or by e-mail at email@example.com, or visit www.shireofblackhawk.org.
