Police arrest teen felon after he crashes stolen vehicle suspected in recent shootings

Rockford police officers — aware a stolen black Mitsubishi had been involved in several recent shootings — observed a black 2004 Mitsubishi in the area of Rockton Avenue and Glenwood Avenue at approximately 4:40 p.m., Thursday, June 26.
Officers attempted to obtain the registration to confirm the status of the Mitsubishi. The driver of the Mitsubishi turned from Rockton Avenue onto Glenwood Avenue and struck the rear of a parked truck. The driver of the Mitsubishi then struck a wire and telephone pole, which disabled the Mitsubishi.
The driver of the Mitsubishi got out of the car and fled on foot. Officers chased and apprehended the driver.
The driver was identified as 18-year-old Wayne Benny Magee Jr. of Rockford. Magee was also found to be on parole. The Mitsubishi had been reported stolen.
Magee has been charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon; unlawful use of a weapon by a felon; aggravated assault with a handgun; resisting an officer; no Firearm Owner’s Identification card; possession of a stolen auto; and Department of Corrections warrant.
