Online Staff Report
At 7 p.m., Saturday, July 5, one of the stateline’s favorite jazz groups brings its music to the Spring Creek UCC auditorium, 4500 Spring Creek Road, Rockford. Named for the offbeat character in Jack Kerouac’s novel On the Road, the Dean Moriarty Jazz Band has been playing to enthusiastic audiences for more than a decade. The band’s repertoire includes dynamic original compositions and jazz classics in a variety of styles, ranging from straight-ahead jazz and bebop to energetic Latin and contemporary sounds.
Band members each have more than 20 years of professional experience in a variety of music clubs and festivals. This long history of music-making brings forth an intense level of musical telepathy during performances. The players improvise new arrangements, melodies and harmonies as they respond to each other and to the audience.
The joy of musical invention is evident in each set, as the band mixes the familiar with the new to form a delightful, aural brew. The music draws on the rich traditions of jazz, but also encompasses pop, rock and world music.
Members include Dan Kasten, drums; Phil Pilcher, saxes; Chris Hyatt, keyboards; Tim Shaffer, bass; and Jeff Layng, trumpet.
There is no admission charge for the event, although attendees will have an opportunity to make optional donations to the musicians. Refreshments, including Bino’s homemade pizza, will be available. Seating is limited to 200 guests.
This event is part of the “Concerts On The Creek” series. For more information, call (815) 979-1949, e-mail COTC4500@gmail.com, or visit www.springcreekucc.org and click the “Concerts On The Creek” logo.
