Beauty of barns discussed at Glidden Homestead in DeKalb July 27

DEKALB, Ill. — Building on the “Year of the Barn” theme, the Joseph F. Glidden Homestead and Historical Center will host a video presentation, The Beauty of Barns, by barn enthusiast Carol Rowe at 1 p.m., Sunday, July 27, at the homestead, 921 W. Lincoln Hwy., DeKalb, Ill.

Kirkland-area resident Denny Rehn again will display a variety of barn construction tools like post and beam drills, axes and what he calls a few oddball tools that visitors may not recognize.

Along with the special events, the homestead will be open for tours from noon to 4 p.m., and blacksmiths will demonstrate their trade in the Phineas Vaughan Blacksmith Shop.

The historic 1860s Glidden home will be open for tours. Admission is $4 per adult, and free for children younger than 14 and Glidden Homestead members. The Glidden Homestead and Historical Center also is a participant in the Blue Star Museums program, offering free admission to active-duty military service members and their families through Labor Day.
