Rock River Trail officials nominated for award

Frank Schier (editor and publisher of The Rock River Times) and Greg Farnham, both of the Rock River Trail Initiative, have been nominated for a River Champions Award by readers of the American Rivers website.

Schier, of Illinois, and Farnham, of Wisconsin, with a management council of dedicated representatives from the 11 counties, have established one of the exemplary water trails in the nation through partnerships with river communities, conservation organizations, and local, state and federal agencies.

In fewer than three years, the Rock River Trail was recognized by the National Park Service by being included in National Water Trails System. Schier founded the 320-mile trail in 2010.

American Rivers is a national organization that advocates for healthy rivers. Through national advocacy, innovative solutions, and a network of strategic partners, it helps protect and promote rivers as valuable assets. Past River Champions include former President Jimmy Carter and former U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks. Late folk singer Pete Seeger has also been nominated for a 2014 award.
