City Market open Friday, parking deck condemned

Staff Report

Rockford City Market will be open Friday, Aug. 22, although the Water Street parking deck will be closed.

Officials have revised the market’s layout, expanding vendor booths toward East State Street to accommodate the closure. All vendors will be present, and there will be a map available so visitors can find the modified layout. Music will be provided from 4-7:30 p.m., by Sonicbloom.

A portion of the parking deck collapsed Tuesday, sending debris down on top of a car parked underneath. The collapse was caused by a loading truck that ignored the weight restriction on the 35-year-old deck. The structure is scheduled to be torn down this fall. It is now condemned.

Exactly what type of substandard construction was apparently utilized in constructing the deck? Who was the engineering firm? It seems parking garages are fragile buildings in Rockford.

I agree, Richard. I find a certain sense of ridiculousness that the city is more concerned about the hole in the Water Street Parking Deck hindering their precious City Market than wondering why a structure such as that fell apart after only 35 years and nobody’s questioning the methods and materials of the contractor who built it.
If you had paid for a structure of that magnitude and cost wouldn’t you be more than upset that it lasted less than 4 decades? The buildings surrounding it must all be around 100 years old and are still standing.

I don’t know if anyone’s noticed but one of the curbs at the new roundabout on College and Seminary is already crumbling….. has it been open a full year yet?
