Man arrested after allegedly attempting to steal refrigerator from vacant home

David J. Schmit, 56, of Rockford, has been charged with burglary — possession of stolen property after allegedly attempting to remove a refrigerator from a vacant house on South Fifth Street Monday, Sept. 8.

Police responded to the 500 block of South Fifth Street in reference to a burglarly in progress. Police had been informed that a citizen had removed a refrigerator from a vacant home. Officers were provided with a description of the suspects’ vehicle.

Responding officers located the suspect in the vehicle in the area of Kishwaukee Street and Third Avenue. The driver, Schmit, told officers he had permission to remove the refrigerator from the residence. He also provided officers with the homeowner’s name.

Upon further investigation, officers learned the homeowner had not given Schmit permission to remove property from the vacant house. It was also learned that Schmit had done repair work at the home in the past.
