Two face heroin, weapons charges after search of Eighth Street apartment

Monday, Sept. 8, Rockford Police Department District 2 officers responded to the 1700 block of Eighth Street to investigate several calls of shots fired.
Several calls were made to police radio, and officers patrolling the neighborhood also heard gunfire. Officers conducted an investigation and determined shots had been fired outside of an apartment building at 1721 Eighth St.
A search of the lower apartment was conducted, and officers recovered two firearms, firearm ammunition, heroin, cannabis and United States currency.
Officers made contact with two occupants of the lower apartment, who were both on parole. The subjects — Dashon Ward, 30, and Bernard Barnes, 27, both of Rockford — were arrested and charged with possession with the intent to deliver heroin within 1,000 feet of a church; possession with the intent to deliver heroin; aggravated unlawful use of weapons by a felon; aggravated Unlawful use of weapons; and no Firearm Owners’ Identification Card (FOID).
According to WinGis, the property at 1721 Eighth St. is owned by Paresh Kumar, who resides in La Puente, California.
