Editor’s note: The writer sent a copy of the following letter to U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, and Mark Kirk, R-Illinois, and U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Illinois.
We are naïve to believe that foreign interests, including countries, are not participating in the funding of elections and controlling the news within the United States. The University of Illinois decision indicates how insidious this practice has become.
From the Wall Street Journal, Sept. 11, 2014: “Steven Salaita, a Palestinian-American professor with an expertise in indigenous studies, accepted a tenure-track position last year to start working in the American Indian Studies Program in Illinois in August. In preparation for his new job, he said he quit his old post at Virginia Tech and sold his house. Then, during the Israel offensive in Gaza this summer, he posted a series of opinions against Israel on Twitter.”
It is quite apparent to me that there will be little inquiry into foreign influences within our institutions, political or educational.
