“Back to Church Sunday,” part of a national movement of churches across America, will be held at New Zion Baptist Church in Rockford, at 8 a.m., and 11a.m., Sunday, Sept. 21.
Everyone is welcome.
National Back to Church Sunday (backtochurch.com) is an initiative that is “Inviting America Back to Church.” It seeks to reach the “un-churched” and “de-churched”—people who have never attended church, or who once attended church but don’t any longer—and invite them to return on a special Sunday. .
In 2013, a Gallup survey stated that 87 percent of people believe in God. Yet only 27 percent of those surveyed individuals attended church in the last seven days. In addition, 82 percent of people who don’t attend church say they would attend if invited by a friend, yet only 2 percent of Christians ever invite someone to church.
For Back to Church Sunday, New Zion Baptist Church will have a special service that features praise dance, vibrant music, and simple but profound preaching. Nursery will be available for both services and Children’s Church during the 11 a.m. service.
“Multiple studies have shown that people who are connected to a faith community live longer, healthier lives and their children do better in school,” said K. Edward Copeland, senior pastor of New Zion Baptist Church. “Back to Church Sunday is an opportunity to for families and individuals to connect to a faith community and to engage one another about the ultimate truths of life. Most people have opinions about Jesus Christ, the church, and Christianity but very few have ever taken the time to investigate what Jesus actually said, what the church actually does and what Christianity actually is.”
Since its inception 6 years ago, National Back to Church Sunday participating churches have extended an estimated 8.5 million invitations to their churches. Over 30,000 churches representing 120 denominations are expected to invite over 3 million people to church this year. There are nearly 100 million Americans, including teens and children, who are presently un-churched as people increasingly move away from attending church and practicing religion.
New Zion Baptist Church is at 604 Salter Ave., Rockford.
