27 businesses penalized for selling alcohol to minors

Online Staff Report

SPRINGFIELD – Twenty-seven Illinois liquor licensees received their varying penalties after appearing before the Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC) at the hearing on Wednesday, Sept. 17. Held at the E.J. Zeke Giorgi Center in Rockford, the ILCC heard each case where a liquor licensee recently failed to comply with the law prohibiting the sale of liquor to customers younger than the legal drinking age of 21.

The original docket included 29 Elgin, Genoa or Rockford licensees, all found to have served alcohol to an ILCC underage participant under 21 years old during ILCC compliance checks in May and June 2014. Two of the 29 cases were rescheduled to a later date. Five of the 29 licensees were facing the same charge for a second time within the last three years.

ILCC underage compliance checks are ongoing and performed on a random basis around the state by ILCC Field Agents, cooperative state or local law enforcement, and minors hired from local high schools and colleges, many with interest in law enforcement as a career.

Because of non-compliance of the law, the licensees were issued penalties of monetary fines, suspension of their state liquor license, or both.
The following establishments violated the law by selling alcohol to ILCC underage participants, and will be included on the hearing docket:
