Handbell choir kicks off First Lutheran’s Sounds from the Sanctuary series

First Lutheran Church, 225 S. Third St., Rockford, offers the first in its eclectic Sounds from the Sanctuary 2014-15 concert series when it presents River Bend Bronze, a community handbell choir based in the Quad City area, at 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 28, at the church.

The group consists of 14 to 16 auditioned ringers whose director, Larry B. Peterson, is director of Music for Campus Ministries at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois.

River Bend Bronze plays advanced literature from the handbell repertoire, with pieces ranging in style and complexity from arrangements of pre-existing melodies to original compositions for handbell choirs.

The concert is free and open to the public. A freewill offering will be received.

First Lutheran, corner of Third and Oak streets, is in the heart of Rockford’s historic Haight Village. A large parking lot sits adjacent to the church. Street parking and nearby public lots are also available. First Lutheran is handicap accessible. The church can be reached at (815) 962-6691.
