The man Jordan Lynch backed up for two years at Northern Illinois got another shot at the NFL Monday, after being signed to the Minnesota Vikings practice squad.
Chandler Harnish, who quarterbacked the Huskies to four straight bowl games, was signed Monday because of injuries to Teddy Bridgewater and Matt Cassel. Cassel has been on injured reserve since breaking his foot Sept. 21. Bridgewater sprained his ankle in Sunday’s 41-28 win over Atlanta. Ponder took over in the fourth quarter, leading the offense to a pair of Blair Walsh field goals.
Ponder will make his 36th start in three years for the Vikings Thursday in Green Bay.
Harnish spent this preseason with Indianapolis. He spent 2012 and 2013 on the Colts’ practice squad. The Colts drafted him in the 7th round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He’s yet to play in a regular-season game.
At NIU, he accumulated more than 11,000 total yards, including an average of 336.92 yards per game in 2011.
“Thank you for the support,” Harnish tweeted. “Excited to be back chasing a dream. Proud to be a Viking!”
