BYRON, Illinois — The Byron Forest Preserve District’s Weiskopf Observatory will recognize National Astronomy Day beginning at 6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 4. This free program will feature the observatory’s three recently refurbished telescopes. Thanks to the work of local astronomer Walter Trentadue, the Byron Forest Preserve District now has three high-quality telescopes for public night viewing, an 11-inch Celestron telescope in the domed observatory building, along with portable 17-inch and 11-inch Dobsonian telescopes. The public is also encouraged to bring their own personal telescopes to this program and learn how to better use them from the district’s astronomy staff and volunteers.
Byron Forest Preserve District’s Weikopf Observatory is at the top of the hill of the Jarrett Prairie Preserve at 7993 N. River Road, in Byron, Illinois. Call (815) 234-8535 for more about this free event
