Staff Report

Whodunnit? Find out when Artists’ Ensemble’s “AE Mystery Theater” makes its debut at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17-18. Admission is free. No reservations and no tickets are required. Just show up and make a free-will contribution.

The response to last year’s performance of After the Thin Man was so overwhelming, we knew we had to do more vintage radio mysteries,” said Artists’ Ensemble Theater Artistic Director Richard Raether. “This year, we are doing two performances for a double dose of homicide.”

Act One is an episode of The Saint in “Everyone Wants to Kill Tommy.” Simon Templar, the Robin Hood of Modern Crime, tries to help Tommy, who is running for his life from both cops and killers. The cigarette girl at the Voodoo Club might be the key to the case. Richard Raether will play Templar.

Act Two is a Thin Man adventure: “The Case of the Gloomy Groom,” with David A. Gingerich and Katie Maringer as Nick and Nora Charles. The married sleuths attend a wedding where someone tries to murder the groom! Before you can say “I do,” Nick and Nora are masquerading as newlyweds at a honeymoon hotel, while trying to trap a killer.

A sound effects table will provide live sound. The cast includes Jan Bacino, Raymond Fanara, John Chase, Lisa Van Dyke, Scott Chacula, Cassie Johnson and Margaret Raether. Tim Anderson accompanies on the piano.

AE Mystery Theater performs in the Cheek Theatre at Rockford University Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17-18, at 7:30 p.m. Read more at www.artistsensemble.org or call the box office at (815) 394-5004.
