A Progressive Visionary
My son is a die-hard far-right conservative. I’d like to ask him:
Why do wealthy institutions insist on privatizing schools?
It’s not about education or parental choice.
Why are trillions of dollars spent purchasing weapons of mass destruction that the military doesn’t want or need?
It’s not about safety, security or arming our military.
Why does the Pentagon need to hand off much of this excess military grade equipment to thousands of police departments across the country that don’t need it? Or rid themselves of it by presenting it to “moderates” in Syria who may very well turn around and donate it to ISIL?
It’s not about making us safe.
Why do giant corporations fight tooth and nail to prevent labeling of GMOs (genetically modified organisms), wage war against small organic farms, confine animals within Holocaust-like death camps, shoot them up with antibiotics to keep them alive long enough to be slaughtered, then expect us to eat them? These tactics create Super Weeds that can’t be killed because they’re immune to the poisons sprayed on the GMO fields, and within us, Super Bacteria immune to antibiotics.
It’s not about the life-giving nutritious food.
Why do pharmaceuticals get drugs “approved prematurely [that] result in mass sickness and fatalities” a human toll that “takes an estimated 100,000 deaths a year in the U.S. from adverse effects of such drugs”? (Ralph Nader, https://blog.nader.org/2014/09/12/the-havoc-of-the-unrestrained-drug-industry/).
It’s not about healing.
And private prisons aren’t about justice. Fracking, like oil, isn’t about fuel.
Preventing climate change, clean water and air, nutritious food, good health, first-rate education, justice for citizens, fair trade will not make buckets of money for the corporate interests, so they have no use for any of it.
That’s why the social safety net, public health, the commons, the general welfare, preservation of the planet — our very democracy — all has to go. And thanks to the conservative justices on the Supreme Court, now corporations can purchase enough politicians outright to make that happen.
Unless we stop them. But too many people think the magic “free market” capitalism is at work. They don’t recognize it’s about to kill us and our planet. We must wake them up.
I want to tell my son: “I love you and your family, and want you to be healthy and prosper. My personal fortune will not be enhanced in any way by telling you this — I’m saying it only in your best interest. But please bear in mind that the Koch brothers, Bill O’Reilly, Fox News, the Heritage Foundation, Republicans, too many Democrats, plus many ‘think tanks’ where you might get your ‘facts,’ don’t care one whit about you, only themselves and their personal fortunes. They’re really only creating corporate-justifying talking points. If you reject what I say, and listen to them, then lose your health, the climate, and everything else, you will only have yourself to blame. Please wake up before it’s too late.”
