It’s one thing to run a 5K, but it’s a whole different race when the course is infested by a horde of zombies! Zombies will yet again invade Atwood Park, 2685 New Milford Road, Rockford, for the Second Annual Zombie Fun Run from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m., Oct. 18. Zombies should arrive no later than 2:30 p.m., and the first group of runners will be released into the woods at 3:30 p.m.
This semi-competitive race will travel through Atwood Park, where peril lurks around every corner and no one is safe from the lumbering undead. Whether you survive the attack or not, there will be an after party complete with prizes and finger food. The Fun Run is for ages 8 and older; youth younger than 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Becky Stokes Lambert, Environmental Recreation and Education manager for the Rockford Park District, said: “If you are looking for a bit of mayhem, this is the event you don’t want to miss! If you want to be a zombie, your mission is to gather as many runner flags as possible. If you want to be a runner, your mission is to travel through the horde of zombies, and arrive back at the finish line with at least one flag.”
Registration is going on now; spots are limited. Registrations will be taken up to the day of the event, unless all spots have been filled. In the event of severe weather, the after party will still be held. Cost is as follows:
• Runners — $20 ($25 non-resident);
• Zombies — $20 ($25 non-resident); and
• After party only — $5 (free for runners and zombies).
Registration can be made online at www.rockfordparkdistrict.org or can be taken in person at Rockford Park District Customer Service locations in downtown Rockford, or at Carlson Ice Arena, Riverside and Perryville, Loves Park.
