In the race for Winnebago County Sheriff in the Nov. 4 general election, the campaign of Republican Gary Caruana has $49,258.30 in remaining funds compared to $33,839.98 for the campaign of Democrat Robert (Bob) Springer, according to reports filed with the Illinois State Board of Elections.

D-2 Quarterly Reports were filed with the Illinois State Board of Elections Oct. 15 and covered the period of July 1-Sept. 30, 2014.

Caruana’s report showed $24,963.17 available at the beginning of the reporting period, $65,385 in total receipts (contributions received), for a subtotal of $90,348.17, minus total expenditures of $41,089.87, for a remaining total of $49,258.30 in remaining funds.

Springer’s report showed $24,049.49 available at the beginning of the reporting period, $15,500 in total receipts (contributions received), for a subtotal of $39,549.49, minus total expenditures of $9,209.51, for a remaining total of $30,339.98 in remaining funds. Springer’s campaign did report two late “A-1, $1,000+ Year Round” contributions totaling $3,500 after the reporting period, which would bring his remaining funds total to $33,839.98.

Caruana, 57, of Rockford, served 26 years as area security manager at United Parcel Service (UPS), largely at Chicago Rockford International Airport’s UPS cargo facility, retiring about one year ago. He also served as a Winnebago County Sheriff’s deputy for eight years in the 1980s.

Springer, 56, of Durand, Illinois, has more than 30 years of law enforcement experience, mostly with the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department, where he began as corrections officer in the jail and worked his way through the ranks to deputy chief. He retired from the Sheriff’s Department five years ago.

Democrats have held the sheriff’s office since 1974.
