University of Illinois Extension’s annual “Horticulture for the Holidays” event is scheduled for 9 a.m.-noon, Nov. 15 (check-in begins at 8:30 a.m.) at Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden, 2715 S. Main St. Participants will experience two make-it-take-it workshops. The $25 fee includes all workshop materials, admission into Klehm Arboretum, and morning beverage service. The hands-on workshops are designed to inspire participants to incorporate horticulture into their seasonal celebrations.
Candice Miller, U of I Extension horticulture educator and floral designer, will present the principles of good floral design, and then lead a hands-on workshop, using fresh botanicals, with participants to create their own one-of-a-kind, fall arrangement. She will then demonstrate how to transform the fall arrangement into a festive winter/holiday arrangement.
Kathy Justis, U of I Extension master gardener and artist, will lead attendees in decorating a set of rustic, one-of-a-kind, wooden votive candle holders to complement their fresh arrangement. Participants will have their choice of fall or winter decorative embellishments. There is also an optional paint treatment.
Event attendees are invited to enjoy the walking paths and winter landscape at Klehm after the event. To register, visit http://web.extension.illinois.edu/jsw or call the U of I Extension office at (815) 986-4357. Registration deadline is Nov. 1; spaces are limited, so register early.
