National Make a Difference Day is Saturday, Oct. 25, and you can make a difference by assisting the Rock River Valley Pantry with its Fourth Annual Stuff the Truck event. This year, the very popular food drive has expanded to two Rockford Schnucks grocery store locations, including the East State Street and Charles Street stores, and the drive will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Patrick Kelly, event coordinator, encourages everyone to participate.
“It’s easy to Make a Difference in the life of someone in need,” Kelly said. “Donate a nonperishable food item and feed someone going hungry! You can bring an item from home or purchase one that day from Schnucks and help us Stuff the Truck.”
Pet food can be donated to help the Kibbles Korner pet pantry, as well.
Last year, more than 2,400 pounds of food was collected, and this year’s goal is 5,000 pounds. The Rock River Valley Pantry provides food to more than 7,500 individuals every month, and every can and every box of food makes a difference.
The Rock River Valley Pantry, a community based food pantry, has assisted hungry children, women and men for the last 40 years. Last year, there was an increase in client visits of 13 percent compared to 2013, and more than 1.1 million pounds of food was distributed to local residents. Last year, more than 80 volunteers donated more than 15,000 hours to help in the rescue, sorting, inspecting and distribution of the food. Volunteers are always needed at the pantry.
