The Salvation Army of Winnebago County kicks off its 46th Food for the Needy Drive from 1 to 1:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 3, at Brookview Elementary School, 1750 Madron Road, in Rockford. The Salvation Army’s goal is to collect non-perishable food items for more than 3,000 families and individuals who will register for Christmas food assistance.
Major Steve Merritt, Winnebago County coordinator for The Salvation Army, said: “This is a very tangible way in which our community can help feed the hungry. We can only reach our goal through the generosity of others.”
Area businesses, churches, schools and other organizations are invited to collect food for The Salvation Army. Anyone wishing to participate in the collection of food can request delivery of a food barrel to their location by emailing uscmet_BarrelRequest@usc.salvationarmy.org or by calling (815) 997-6917. “The donated food also sustains our food pantry over the remaining winter months,” Merritt added.
The Salvation Army of Winnebago County will hold its Christmas Registration for those wishing to receive food assistance between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday-Friday, Nov. 10-14, and 4 and 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 13, at The Salvation Army Tabernacle Corps, 210 N. Kilburn Ave., Rockford. Late registration will be taken at the same location between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5.
Families and individuals wishing to register for assistance will need to bring the following information at the time of registration:
1. Photo ID for head of household;
2. Proof of residence for each member of the household, including children (current medical card OR lease OR recent mail OR school records); and
