Veterans ride free on RMTD Oct. 31

Rockford-area veterans with valid service identification will be able to enjoy a free ride on Rockford Mass Transit Friday, Oct. 31, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. This free ride for veterans program is being done in conjunction with the 2014 Top of Illinois Stand Down for Veterans sponsored in part by State Rep. Litesa Wallace’s, D-Rockford, office.

The Stand Down for Veterans is being held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the UAW Hall, 112 N. Second St., Rockford. During that time, various community organizations will be offering services such as medical treatment, employment consultation, Vet Center/VA Help, clothing distribution and hair cuts in an effort to show their appreciation for the sacrifices made by our veterans. RMTD will be showing their appreciation by offering free rides for veterans from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is RMTD’s hope that the free rides will eliminate any transportation barriers and enable every veteran to participate in this event.

The UAW Hall is directly accessible via several RMTD routes including No. 11 East State Street, No. 12 Charles Street and the outbound No. 14 Seventh St. route. However, all routes are free to veterans with appropriate service ID that day. Veterans using the RMTD system that day between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. need only board the bus and present their military ID cards to the driver.

For more information, call RMTD at (815) 961-9000.
