The Odds Man: NFL QBs holding up Vegas in Week 9
By Jeff Helberg
The Odds Man
Quarterback questions are keeping Vegas from opening lines for Arizona at Dallas, Washington at Minnesota, and New York Jets at Kansas City. It seems RG3 (Robert Griffin III) and Mike Vick will be starting, but I haven’t heard about Tony Romo.
Dozens of readers are asking me to provide some rationale for my bets to help them decide easier, so I will starting this week. Good bets this week:
Was pick vs MN: RG3 should be back; line has already improved, and might some more, so waiting could pay off.
NE +3.5 vs Den: Should be a shootout, and if it is, Patriots should cover and win.
Mia -1 over SD: Chargers have a lot of big names on the disabled list.
NYJ +10.5 vs KC: Only if Vick is starting.
Hou +2 vs Phi: Texans’ defense might be too much, and they can also run the ball.
Pit +1 vs Bal: How strong are your nerves? This series is always a barn burner, decided by a field goal. Ravens rule it, but now have lost CB J. Smith. On the other hand, the Steelers could be in a letdown spot after last week’s highlight reel game. So there you go.
Jac +11.5 vs Cin: Three things: Jacksonville has LT Luke Joeckel back, the Bengals are in a letdown role after their heart attack win over the Ravens, and the Jaguars are receiving double digits.
NYG +3.5 vs IN: Colts have a lot of injuries.
Dal -4 over Ari: Only if Romo starts.
Oak +15 vs Sea: Seattle will win, but Oakland wants it more, so giving them two scores might be too generous.
