Local harassment suspect arrested in Florida
CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. – Police say William Wayne Bigel was taken into custody at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 6, by Citrus County Sheriff’s deputies. Investigators in Florida had been watching the home where Bigel was arrested for more than week, after learning from law enforcement here that he may be hiding in their jurisdiction.
Bigel is accused of hacking into a Facebook page owned by 15-year-old Megan Schultz, of Loves Park, who died of a brain defect last month. Police say Bigel “attacked” the teen’s page, prompting Facebook to take it offline. That’s when he allegedly created a fake page that mimicked Megan’s original. There, authorities allege that Bigel made posts claiming Schultz had been sexually assaulted by her father.
During their investigation, police say they learned Bigel has allegedly harassed dozens of people in recent years. There are also more than 50 pending complaints against him for telephone harassment. According to reports, most of the victims in those cases have been recently deceased young women and their families.
Bigel has been charged with probation violation and harassment/making obscene phone calls. Winnebago County court records show he was convicted of stalking in 2013 and sentenced to two years probation.
