Food Bank joins national #GivingTuesday movement
Online Staff Report
GENEVA, Illinois — Northern Illinois Food Bank (NIFB) has joined #GivingTuesday, a national movement that inspires people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities and give better and smarter to the charities and causes they support to create a better world.
NIFB is participating in the Dec. 2 #GivingTuesday campaign as a way to raise funds to support its mission of solving hunger in northern Illinois. More than 71,000 people each week seek food assistance through NIFB’s network of 800 community food pantries and feeding programs across 13 counties. NIFB is able to turn every $1 donated into $8 of groceries for hungry neighbors.
On #GivingTuesday, all gifts from new donors will be matched by Illinois Children’s Healthcare, helping provide more nutritious food to hungry children in the community. Donations can be made at NIFB’s website, www.SolveHungerToday.org, and supporters are encouraged to share this opportunity to double the impact of their donation with friends and family.
“We encourage everyone to participate in our #GivingTuesday campaign to help us provide more nutritious food to the 71,000 hungry neighbors who seek food throughout our network of food pantries and feeding programs every week,” said Julie Yurko, NIFB president and CEO. “We so appreciate the generosity of our donors, and we are proud to say that we can stretch every $1 donated into $8 of groceries for neighbors in need.”
Annually coinciding with Thanksgiving and the kickoff of the holiday shopping season, #GivingTuesday will harness the power of social media to create a national moment around the holidays dedicated to giving, similar to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days that are, today, synonymous with holiday shopping.
