The public is invited to cheer on national junior division champions Rockford Jr. Chariots Wheelchair Basketball Team as they host and play in the 15th Annual Jr. Wheelchair Basketball Holiday Tournament Dec. 6-7 at Machesney Park Harlem High School, 9229 N. Alpine Road, Machesney Park, Illinois. Games take place Saturday starting at 9 a.m., with the last game at 6 p.m. Sunday, the first game starts at 9 a.m., with the championship game taking place at 3 p.m. Admission is free.
Twenty teams from around the Midwest will compete for the chance to bring home the trophy. Participating teams include: Rolling Falcons, Mini Pacers, Milwaukee Heat, Chicago Skyhawks, GLASA WAVE, Jr. Bulls, Jr. Chariots, Racers, Jr. Rolling Gophers, Peoria Wildcats, Grand Rapids Jr. Pacers, Turnstone Flyers and Windy City Warriors.
The Jr. Chariots team has had a great season, and is expected to finish first in the Junior Varsity division this year. The team is composed of players from ages 6 to 18, and is one of many adapted sports and paralympic sports programs offered by the Rockford Park District for athletes with disabilities.
The team is coached by Rockford Park District Therapeutic Recreation staff members Justin South, Carnell Brown and Paula Reiter; the team has a roster of eight players.
