The beauty of the Christmas season will come to life Sunday, Dec. 14, during Court Street United Methodist Church’s annual Christmas Cantata. A performance of John Rutter’s Magnificat will be performed. It will be held during the 10 a.m. worship service, and is free to the public.
“It is one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever heard,” pointed out Julia Schade Armstrong, music director at Court Street. “We are extremely excited about performing this wonderful selection, and since this will be my final cantata here at the church, I couldn’t think of a better choice to finish with.”
The Chancel Choir of Court Street United Methodist Church, along with soloists, chamber orchestra, and organ will all contribute to the performance.
A cantata is a choral composition that is based on a sacred text, often from Scripture readings appropriate to a specific church season, such as Christmas. The Christmas season has inspired many types of cantatas over the centuries.
The Christmas Cantata takes place in the main sanctuary of the church. All are welcome to attend.
Court Street United Methodist Church is at 215 N. Court St., in downtown Rockford (one block north of West State Street, four blocks west of the river). Call the church office at (815) 962-6061 for more details.
