Staff Report

As of Jan. 1, 2015, Phoenix Traders — a local import and fair-trade retailer at 215 Seventh St., Rockford — will no longer be giving out plastic carrier bags to customers.

Customers are asked to bring their own reusable bags or to buy one at the store. The store’s reusable bags are 100 percent recyclable, made from 50 percent post-consumer low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and 50 percent PIR (post-industrial regrind) LDPE. The bag is not only reusable, it is also made in the USA and contains no lead, mercury or chromium, all poisonous heavy metals.

Both of Phoenix Traders’ owners, Janet and Jim Phelps, are avid world travelers and sea turtle protectors and wish to reduce the amount of plastic bags entering the oceans that are killing marine life around the planet.
