Teen shooting victim identified as Auburn High student

Jazznique Fort, 15, has been identified as the fatal victim in the Friday, Jan. 2, shooting that occurred around 1:56 a.m. in the 800 block of Lee Street in Rockford.

Fort, a student at Rockford Auburn High School, died after suffering a single gunshot wound to the head, according to Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia.

Fort’s father, Natreal Lamar Fort, was killed in a one-car accident off Pierpont Avenue near Montague Road in February 2012.

Police responded to a call of a shooting victim in a parking lot in the 800 block of Lee Street around 1:56 a.m., Jan. 2. Upon arrival, officers found two males and a female huddled around another female — Fort — who was lying on the ground. Fort, who was not breathing, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office.

A 19-year-old male also reported being shot in the leg during the incident. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses told police that unknown individuals fired upon the group from a moving dark gray or black minivan.

Jazznique Fort’s death marked the first homicide of 2015 in Rockford. The city saw 18 homicides in 2014.
