NIU to name Kunigonis new head baseball coach

NIU-HuskiesOnline Staff Report

Mike Kunigonis is expected to be named the next head baseball coach at Northern Illinois University (NIU) in DeKalb, Illinois.

Kunigonis is an assistant coach at Virginia Tech. At NIU, he will replace Ed Mathey, who resigned in November to return to his alma mater, Division III North Central (Illinois).

Mathey was 294-371-2 in 12 seasons at NIU. The Huskies were 17-36-1 last season.

Kunigonis, 34, has never been a head coach at the Division I level. He has been with Virginia Tech since 2008, where he became a full-time assistant in 2010 and was named associate head coach in 2013.

Virginia Tech qualified for the NCAA tournament in 2010 and 2013.

Kunigonis is a Massachusetts native who played at Division II American International in Massachusetts.
