Online Staff Report

Vacant Asher Tool buildings at the corner of 11th Street and 18th Avenue in Rockford are a total loss following a massive fire that began around 1:30 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 6.

The fire began in an abandoned warehouse and then spread to a second structure. A contractor was called in to demolish the buildings to avoid an accidental collapse.

Below-zero temperatures hampered efforts to combat the blaze, and firefighters were rotating often to avoid over-exposure. One firefighter sustained a minor ankle injury.

Power was shut down in the area, while a number of businesses were forced to close for the day.

The owner of the vacant buildings has been contacted, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

God Bless those guys. Yesterday’s actions were above and beyond their call of duty, but they fought the fire with no hesitation.
