Kiwanis at 100: Local clubs to celebrate Jan. 9

January 2015 marks one century of Kiwanis service. Kiwanis clubs across the world will begin celebrating 100 years of Kiwanis this month.
Local Kiwanis clubs will kick off the beginning of the 100-year celebration with a Mardi Gras event Friday, Jan. 9, at Prosser’s Chop House, 11189 Forest Hills Road, Machesney Park, Illinois.
Participating clubs include Alpine Kiwanis Club, Rock Valley Heritage Kiwanis Club, Rockford Golden K Club, Kiwanis Club of Rockford, The Parks Club (Loves Park and Machesney Park), Freeport Noon Kiwanis, Lincoln Douglas Kiwanis Club and Freeport Golden K Club.
Social hour begins at 6 p.m., with dinner buffet at 6:30 p.m. and music by Three Good Men from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Mardi Gras attire is encouraged. Votes will be taken for King and Queen of the event based on best Mardi Gras attire.
Illinois Eastern Iowa Gov. Jim Dooley from the Peoria Kiwanis Club will be in attendance.
Additional highlight is 100th Annual Kiwanis International Convention, June 25-28, in Indianapolis.
The first Kiwanis Club was formed by Detroit businessmen in January 1915.
