Sounds of Good News offers King Day celebration Jan. 19

Staff Report

Sounds of Good News (SOGN) Productions is presenting its “Young Eagles Success” (YES) Club’s ninth annual “School’s-Out Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration” Monday, Jan. 19 (the actual federal holiday) from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Mendelssohn Hall Auditorium, 406 N. Main St., Rockford. Admission is free and open to the public.

The event will feature the “Young Eagles Soaring Inspirational Choir” (YES-IC), under the Direction of Carl and Dianna Cole. Special guests will include Betty Pumphrey (piano and voice) as well as the Rockford Area Arts Council Choraleers, under the direction of Dorothy Paige-Turner.

This year’s theme is: “A PEACE Movement for Improvement,” in conjunction with SOGN’s movement for “PEACE” (Positive Energy And Character Excellence) to bring FREEDOM from drugs, alcohol, violence, crime and stress for kids using the inspirational, educational, universal language of music. The movement was inspired by the “YES” Club receiving the “Partner in Peace” Award from the Violence Prevention Collaborative of the Winnebago County Health Department. The Council Choraleers recently received the award as well.

The celebration is co-sponsored by the Mendelssohn PAC, Wisdom And You Enterprises, and St. Paul Lutheran Church. Donations will benefit the “YES” Club winter/spring projects.
