Rockford Urban Ministries director celebrates 30 years with Jan. 18 talk
Online Staff Report
Rockford Urban Ministries (RUM) Executive Director Stanley Campbell will celebrate his 30th year as head of RUM with a 10 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 18, talk at Centennial United Methodist Church, 1503 Broadway, Rockford.
Campbell will speak about “Being A Good Neighbor.”
Centennial United Methodist Church has weathered a move from South Second Street to Broadway and has brought its mission and neighborhood outreach with it. Every Saturday for the last 20 years, volunteers have helped kids complete art projects, get support with homework, and serve breakfast and lunch at their Saturday Kids Club.
Monday night sees the congregation providing special English as a Second Language classes where many people, especially the newly arrived Burmese refugees, receive help with their language skills.
Centennial’s youth program on Wednesday night and Sunday morning, led by David Holland, has helped kids through particularly difficult times in their lives. These ministries join the established work of nonprofit organizations on Broadway with outreach and support of their neighbors.
Campbell will lift up two of the more important neighborhood nonprofits — Crusader Health and Zion Development. One of Zion Development’s first projects was rehabbing a former single-room occupancy hotel, notorious for its police calls, into a welcoming home called the Grand Apartments, just down the street on Broadway.
Forty-five adult men and women who would otherwise be homeless make their home at the Grand, which is Rockford’s first permanent supportive housing facility.
Besides supporting health services for many of its neighbors, Crusader Health, at Broadway and Seventh Street, also has special outreach programs for homeless men and women and for those living with HIV and AIDS. Campbell will speak about their impact in the community.
RUM is an outreach of 20 United Methodist churches in the Rockford area and supports new and special programs and encourages the churches to get involved in the community.
