Unless you went to the Harlem Globetrotters’ game last month or you are an IceHogs fan, there hasn’t been much sporting action at Rockford’s BMO Harris Bank Center recently. In years past, they’ve hosted a variety of different sporting events. Is it my imagination, or have those types of shows dried up and moved away?
I know for certain that the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates is rocking with sports action. Not only are they the home for the Chicago Mustangs, a professional arena soccer team, but they also have several sports-related shows coming into their building between now and the end of March.
The Mustangs wrap up their season with two more home games. They host the Wichita B-52’s on Saturday night, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m., and then on Feb. 15 at 3 p.m., the Syracuse Knights close out the home schedule for the Mustangs.
Feb. 6 and 7, the Professional Championship Bullriders World Tour will invade the Sears Centre. It’s two nights of action-packed bull riding, barrel racing and family fun. The Friday night show includes a concert by country music star Colt Ford.
If Cowboy sports isn’t your cup of tea, you can catch some of the best female basketball players in the country during the Women’s Big Ten Tournament. Games tip off March 4 and continue until a champion is crowned March 8.
Without looking too far down the road, a show similar to those that used to be very popular in our town has moved fewer than 65 miles east of here. The Monster Truck Nationals roars into the Sears Centre Arena March 20 and 21.
I’m not suggesting it’s simple or easy to procure these shows, I’m simply wondering why they’re not coming here with the frequency they once did. I love hockey as much as the next guy, but I also realize it’s not for everyone.
A little variety could go a long way in attracting more than just IceHogs fans into the “Big Orange Box.” I’d like to see the venue used for a wider assortment of sporting events once again. It seems to me the powers in charge have gotten away from that idea.
Until that happens, keep in mind it’s slightly more than an hour’s drive to the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates. For more about any of their upcoming events, you can call their box office at (847) 649-2451 on log onto their website at www.SearsCentre.com.
