Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana (R) has named Mark Karner chief deputy of the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department.

In his new role, Karner will serve as the Sheriff’s Department’s second-in-command. Karner is currently a Deputy United States Attorney in Rockford. Prior to that, Karner was a long-time felony prosecutor in the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Caruana said: “Mark Karner has a long and varied background in the criminal justice system and will provide unique expertise to the department in its efforts to concentrate in gathering intelligence and in combating violent crime, illegal drugs and gangs. One of Karner’s first objectives will be to assist in organizing, developing, and training the sheriff’s new Tac Unit, a specialized group of deputy sheriffs who will work in high-crime and high-problem areas.”

Karner is scheduled to begin his new duties Feb. 9. Current Winnebago County Chief Deputy Kurt Ditzler is being reassigned to administrative chief in charge of operational improvement, quality control and special projects.
