What is the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)? It’s a secret trade deal cooked up by corporations that we the people weren’t supposed to learn about until it was too late. But Wikileaks enlightened us by publishing parts of it in 2013. Some particulars:
Lori Wallach compares it to “NAFTA on steroids. “In June a text of the TPP investment chapter was leaked, revealing that US negotiators are even pushing to expand NAFTA’s notorious corporate tribunals, which have been used to attack domestic public interest laws.
“Think of the TPP as a stealthy delivery mechanism for policies that could not survive public scrutiny,” she says. “Indeed, only two of the twenty-six chapters … cover traditional trade matters. The rest embody the most florid dreams of the 1 percent – grandiose new rights and privileges for corporations and permanent constraints on government regulation. They [help] ease job offshoring, … assert control over natural resources, and severely limit the regulation of financial services, land use, food safety, natural resources, energy, tobacco, healthcare and more.”
William Jasper: “It is a regional trade agreement aimed at integrating the economic, legal, and political systems of Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Vietnam — and the United States…. [I]t proposes a radical, unconstitutional transformation of our republic and of the entire governing structure of our nation.”
Represent.US: “[W]e know the [TPP] takes money and power away from the American people and gives it to cronies and entrenched special interests.”
Mark Anderson: “Wikileaks also explained: ‘Access to drafts of the TPP chapters is shielded from the general public. Members of the US Congress are only able to view selected portions … under strict supervision…. [O]nly three individuals in each TPP nation have access to the full text of the agreement, while 600 “trade advisers” — lobbyists [from] large US corporations such as Chevron, Halliburton, Monsanto and Walmart — are granted privileged access to crucial sections of the treaty text…. And we mustn’t assume the Obama administration will rescue the American public.”
Email from Campaign For America’s Future: “The Trans-Pacific Partnership is a massive trade deal. It is being negotiated in secret, with citizens locked out. Big corporations and banks literally sit at the negotiating table. They spent millions on election contributions and lobbyists and they are getting their money’s worth….”
President Obama could stop this, but he has lined up with Congressional Republicans and the corporate lobby to “grease the skids for the TPP” with “fast track” authority.
Please sign the petition to President Obama to stop this. We need 100,000 signatures by March 2. Tell your friends. We must stop this!
